What is GENOMICS IN ANIMAL GENETICS?

This is when Mother Nature, who often does things right, allows the offspring of the cross between two quite different individuals to perform better than the average of its two parents.
This property is, of course, widely used in Groupe Grimaud’s animal breeding companies, allowing us to offer the production sector animals with this ‘hybrid vigour’.

Animal husbandry is a noble and demanding mission. Livestock farming methods, health standards, environmental standards, animal welfare: farming contexts are constantly evolving and the farmer must be able to ensure the competitiveness of their production in good working conditions.
Genetic selection makes it possible to develop strains that are adaptable to different production methods, more robust, more sociable and more efficient. The key to developing the right animals for a constantly changing environment? Anticipation of customer needs!

Livestock farming practices are evolving in line with the food needs of the population. Technical and environmental performance, robustness against diseases, or social interactions: the ideal characteristics of livestock follow these changes. As close as possible to our customers and their challenges, we anticipate the medium- to long-term needs of the markets and orient our genetic selection programs accordingly. The numerous pure lines available to Groupe Grimaud ensure the necessary genetic diversity to meet the expectations of farmers and the industry in over 100 countries.

Groupe Grimaud is developing a ‘multi-species’ approach to genetic selection. We consider that the R&D experience of one of our species is a tremendous source of innovation for the others.
To do this we have created Genetech™, a multi-technology R&D innovation platform that aims to share the research work and the know-how of our 30 multispecies researchers. The Genetech™ platform also accelerates the genetic progress that benefits our customers by pooling R&D investments.

Not all individual animals have the same morphology for the same weight. In a given population, meat yield is improved by choosing the most muscular animals. Our researchers use the latest imaging technologies, such as the CT-Scanner, on which they develop artificial intelligence algorithms. We thus non-intrusively detect the animals combining better meat yield performance and robustness. These animals are selected for breeding and thus give birth to offspring with improved performance.

There are two levels:
1. In Research and Development, the experience and breeding techniques developed for one species can benefit others. Similarly, some selection tools are cross-functional: computer platform, database, genetic evaluation model, RFID and imaging technology, behavioural or animal welfare evaluation, etc.
2. Commercially, this makes it possible to offer a varied range of products to large animal protein producers who are also multi-species.

Providing our customers with good animals is the basis of our business, but it is not enough to guarantee the best results. Zootechnics, nutrition, animal welfare, veterinary care, good equipment and building settings: livestock farming calls for many areas of expertise essential for achieving optimised production. Aware of this complexity, we have developed ‘Weezyou’, a digital platform of services for livestock farmers and breeders.
‘Weezyou’ provides technical support for our customers through video tutorials, technical documentation, training, podcasts and remote consultations on all areas of expertise in livestock farming. In order to provide the best offer available, the services proposed by ‘Weezyou’ are either provided by our teams in our direct areas of expertise, or by our external partners selected for their expertise.

‘Genomics’ is a technique that makes it possible to associate phenotypic traits (those that can be observed) with particular genes in the genome. The latter are markers that can be used to predict certain qualities of the animals, and thus to select them with greater precision.
For Groupe Grimaud, quantitative genetic genealogy remains the basis of the selection work. Genomics simply brings more precision.
